Benny and the Blue Ball • Watercolor, casein and Prismacolor pencils

Benny is a very handsome Black Lab, and my friend Stanley commissioned this portrait for her mother’s birthday pres-ent. I worked from several photos, but my favorite setting for Benny was on the marvelous old rug with its elaborate pattern and dusty shades of rose and green. And I loved the contrast between Benny’s cool black coat and the deep warmth of the cherry floor boards. The focal point of the small blue rubber ball was a perfect accent, matching the blue shadow on Benny’s jaw.
