Faces of Stonington
Oil on gessoed panel
24" x 36"

My photographer friend Don Schroder spent a week up in Maine last summer, and took loads of photos of Maine scenes. The one he took of Stonington was in black and white and had a huge bank of clouds as a backdrop. I thought it would be fun to re-interpret the scene in color. I added a few houses and pushed some others around till I got the pleasantly cluttered look I wanted. I needed one more boat for the foreground, and my friend Linda Kirby sent me her photo of the dazzling white “Downeast Pride” out of Belfast which I placed in the center. I think what makes Stonington’s look so out of the ordinary is its eye-popping Opera House right smack in the middle of this dollhouse village.
