My affection for hard-working tugboats is evident here. This jazzy red workhorse passes through the Narrows on its way out to meet its contract ship in New York City Harbor. I worked from an old photo, and decided to create a foggy atmosphere to emphasize that rough weather doesn’t stop these sturdy little boats from doing their job, keeping the great shipping lanes operating smoothly. The boat’s bright red color makes it stand out against the misty blue of the landscape as fog thickens the air. I simplified the water by using subtly varied strokes of color to hint at reflections and currents. And the boat’s fine detailing has been great training for me to achieve smooth straight lines on a very small scale.
