For years, my sister Anne and I had a friendly gardening competition to see who achieved the best summer crop. I must admit that Anne has completely triumphed for the last few years, outdoing herself each season in volume, size and colorful variety of her vegetables. The bright side is that she sends me photos of the latest ripe beauties hanging on the vine. I find them inspirational, and am happily painting away surrounded by delectable produce.
This oil painting features her luscious eggplant and giant red tomato. I thought artichokes would make suitable companions for these beauties, and purchased three at a local farmer's market here in Maine. I used many rich shades of purple, green and bright red throughout the design. The background features hand-lettered vegetable names forming the borders. |
