On Cape Cod, everybody loves to garden. Being stuck out in the ocean, the Cape enjoys a milder climate than most of New England, so the gardening season is longer. Every cottage has its own showy selection of roses, lilies, daffodils and the iconic blue hydrangea. One of the most spectacular traffic-stopping gardens I’ve ever seen was the stretch of sidewalk in the center of Harwich Port. The elaborate display of flowers changed with the seasons, beginning in April and going straight through till October. The benefactor was Dr. Richard Fennell, a wealthy pharmacist from Boston, who purchased several choice properties in Harwich Port. A marvelous take on the proposal to “Beautify America”! |
